A virtual private server (VPS) or what we can also refer to as virtual dedicated server (VDS), is a method in which a physical single server computer is partitioned into multiple servers that are capable of running their own systems. A VPS can be re-booted independently and can run its own operating system. This is highly cost effective.
To understand, a VPS is a hosting environment where both shared hosting and dedicated hosting can be shared. This is done by making a virtual sever inside a hardware server but specially partitioned.
Each VPS can run securely and privately. This will give you an access of a dedicated server while sharing the cost of the hardware. Moreover, at a fraction of the cost, you can actually run your own server.
Physical servers are normally re-booted. Then, it runs a program to boot the virtual servers within the virtualization environment. The virtual servers are booted from a disk image and have no direct access to hardware.
Virtualizations can be software based and hardware based. Software based virtualizations share the same kernel and needs the main node's resources. The web-hosting environment is the one that mostly benefits from this due to the quota incrementing and decrementing in real time.
The hardware virtualization environment partitions the real hardware resources. This can be more secure but is also dependent of a Larger Computing Base.
There are many uses of a VPS. First, they can bridge the gap between web hosting services and dedicated hosting, making it more independent from other customers through the VPS service in the software rather than a physical dedicated server.
Since a VPS runs its own system, customers can have access and may install any software that they like but they have to make sure that this will run because some software like anti-virus programs and firewalls will not work. Since there are many clients in the VPS, they have to make the RAM, processor time and disk space limited.
Second, a VPS can be copied for possible-insecure public services. For example, a single server can have two VPS’s, one for hosting the production web site and the other as a copy of it. They can also do the updating in the second VPS especially when the updates are crucial.
Last, a VPS allows a machine to run software with security flaws without jeopardizing the rest of the server.
